APPENDIX II - ABERDEEN CORPORATION TRAMWAY ROLLING STOCK in 1947

(From Modern Tramway, Aug 1947, vol 10 no 116) pp 66, 68)

The early cars were allocated to specific routes and were painted and inscribed accordingly. Cars on each route were numbered independently of those on other routes. Thus from 1899 to 1902 the car stock included the following, all type B4E:

NumbersDateRoute
1-81899Woodside
1-31902Rosemount
1-3c.l901Queens Cross
1-41900Mannofield
1-61900Bridges

In 1902 all but the Woodside cars were renumbered into one continuous series. This series, to which new stock was added periodically, is given below:

(In the above tables, the column headed 'Type' gives the League Classification of the car type; the first letter B (open top) or C (closed top) is followed by the number of wheels, then B (totally enclosed), A (canopied on both decks, no vestibules), C (enclosed top deck only), D (vestibuled driver's platform only) or E (no canopies or vestibules). 'A.C.T.' is Aberdeen Corporation Transport.

(c) From British Electric Car Co., equipped as Nos. 1-8 but seating 30/24. Found too narrow, making fare collection difficult. Scrapped fairly early; none top-covered.

(d) As Nos. 21-24, but with wider bodies. All later top-covered in various styles. Nos. 25, 28 extant 1946, type C4D.

(h) A.C.T.'s first top-covered new cars. Westinghouse equipment, 1E trucks.

(i) Built by J. T. Clark, Aberdeen; 21E trucks; all later vestibuled. All extant 1946, type C4D; P-35 trucks on 72-73, 21E 74-77; Eng. Elec controllers.

(k) All extant 1936, P-35 trucks. 57-63 C4B, 66-67 C4D. Ex-horse cars Nos. 64-65 were never replaced.

(l) 2 x 30 h.p. Westinghouse motors, Westinghouse 90 controllers, 21E trucks. Built for Sea Beach route. No seats over canopies. None ever top-covered. 84, 86 extant 1946.

(m) 21E trucks when built; P-35 in 1946, except 93, 95, not extant. All now C4D except 99 which is C4B.

(n) No. 100 ('Jubilee car'), first totally enclosed car. Series extant 1946, with air brakes and P-35 trucks.

(o) Extant 1946, P-35 trucks (109 21E), seats 40/24.

(p) Extant 1946; American Brill on 116-119 and 121-2; P-35 on 120/3/4. 125 planned but never assembled; truck parts used for spares.

(q) Extant 1946, P-35 trucks, air brake; seats 40/26.

(r) Purchased second hand from Nottingham Corporation in 1936. Built 1926. 2 x 40 h.p. Eng. Elec motors. All extant 1946 except No. 4; P-22 trucks on all but 12-14, 18, which have 21E.

(s) Streamlined high speed luxury cars, extant 1946; Eng. Elec bodies and equipment; E.M.B. trucks and air brake. Bogie cars, centre entrance.

(t) As (s) but single truck.

Postscript: It seems that when the 20 bogie cars arrived in 1949, they were given the numbers 19-38. Some of the older cars may have been scrapped then; the ex-Nottingham ones seem to have gone around the time the ex-Manchester Pilchers arrived.
